- The Bread!
Choosing a bread that is both soft and freshly baked is absolutely the key to creating the best sandwich ever!
- Choose the best Ingredients!
But also, what defines a good sandwich is what you put on the bread! This perfect Italian sandwich topping will exceed all of your expectations and bring your average sandwich to a bold new level that you’ll likely dream about later! I know I do!
All Sandwichs Should Require Toppings!
This topping reminds me of the olive salad on a New Orleans Muffuletta, except without the olives! Pickles take the place of the olives without overpowering the other veggies at all! I love this recipe and I am a huge condiment fan! The fresher, the better!
The Best Hoagie Sandwich Secret Right Here!
This is not my recipe! Trina, my best friend, created this delicious topping! This is an incredibly simple sandwich topping idea that comes together in no time! Here's her explanation of how she came up with it, in her own words.
Trina wrote:
A chopped selection of my favorites, marinated & spiced to top savory sandwiches. This simple recipe was born out of my craving for an Italian cold-cut sub topped with "everything".
Salty, crunchy, tangy?? Yes, please!!!
The term at local delis in New England, "everything" means lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, hot peppers, oil, and spices.
Our version melds these ingredients into a spoonable topping that can be kept stored in the fridge. It's ready to go for homemade deli-style sandwiches anytime! Because the topping is quite juicy, it works best with toasted bread or bulker bread such as a sub roll or hoagie.
Although I recommend high-quality deli meat & cheese (such as imported ham & sharp provolone) this topping can certainly dress up pre-packaged proteins as well for the perfect sandwich!
Where's the lettuce?
Because lettuce gets soggy, I leave them out of this "relish" and put it on each sandwich fresh every time. Sometimes I just skip the leaves. There's so much flavor here, the lettuce is not missed!
